Bevrijding Dieteren WWII

Horace Wallace Ashton werd geboren op 27 augustus 1915 in het dorp High Lane in Cheshire als zoon van Thomas Horace Ashton en Maud Elizabeth. Tijdens de opname van de Census in 1921 woonde hij samen met ouders, 2 broers en een zus Windlehurst Road, High Lane, Marple, Cheshire. In 1936 huwde hij met Catherine Watt (Kathleen) Gilstin en in 1939 woonden zij 2 Wybersley Road, High Lane, Marple U.D., Cheshire. Inmiddels was toen ook hun dochter Patricia al geboren. Hij werkte toen als wegbeheerder in Marple, Cheshire.

Road Cleaner (Captain Now) Wins M.C.

CAPT. HORACE ASHTON, peace-time road cleaner for
Marple Council, has been awarded the M.C. for
gallantry while serving with the B.L.A.
First news his family had of the award was a photograph showing Field-Marshal Montgomery decorating him on the field. Which his mother, Mrs Maud Ashton, of Windlehurst-road, High-lane, near Stockport, showed me yesterday.
Captain Ashton joined up in 1939 and was soon offered a commission. He took part in the Normandy invasion on D-Day.
He has not told his mother, or his wife, Mrs. Kathleen Ashton, who lives at Wimbersley, Middle- wich, how he earned the M.C. Mrs. Ashton has two other sons and a son-in-law in the Forces. Captain Ashton, who is 29, was educated at High Lane Church School, and won a scholarship to King's School, Macclesfield.
He worked several years for Marple Council, and Coun. J. H. Faulkner, of the Highways and Water Committee, who also lives in Windlehurst-road, told me: “Horace was highly appreciated, and we intended to promote him as soon as we could from his job on the outdoor staff.”

In 1939 gaf hij zich op voor militaire dienst en al snel had hij zich opgewerkt tot ‘Captain’ bij zijn eenheid de Durham Light Infantry. Tijdens de bevrijding van Dieteren op 16 januari 1945 was hij dus Captain bij de 9th Bn. Durham Light Infantry en voor zijn moedige en doortastend optreden werd hij onderscheiden met het Militairy Cross.

Action for which commended
At DIETEREN on 16 Jan '45, 9 Bn Durham Light Infantry
had captured the village when enemy counter attacked the
bridge site in rear of the Bn.
Capt ASHTON was ordered to take a platoon and deal
with the enemy. On reaching the area of the bridge some
sixty Germans were observed in the vicinity. About forty
were moving towards the bridge and the other twenty were
seen near a barn.
Capt ASHTON ordered one section to engage the
party of forty with fire, and he himself led the other
two sections in a charge against the party near the barn.
After a short fierce hand to hand struggle the
enemy fled leaving five or six dead on the field and eight
prisoners on our hands.
Capt ASHTON then took up a defensive position round
the barn and directed artillery fire on to the party of
forty, with such accuracy that the enemy withdrew leaving
several dead and wounded.
By his quick and resolute actions this officer
averted a serious threat to the building of the bridge
which was indispensable for the success of the operation.

Thanks to his great grandson Chris Martin: Another story that he recounted several times during is later life in England was when he was leading a platoon in Dieteren and he had to deal with some German soldiers. These soldiers infiltrated behind them and they were shooting at the Royal Engineers that tried to make a bridge at the Vloedgraaf between Baakhoven and Dieteren. When they moved he heard several times a clicking sound of guns being operated and he trows him to the ground. But it turned out the clicking sound was of his waterbottle as the water was frozen and when he moved the ice bounced in the bottle making the clicking sound. Zijn dochter Patricia schreef in 2010 en 2011 nog het volgende over haar vader: “He had two brothers, Frank and Raymond, and a sister, Nora. He had three children and became an Overall Manufacturer mainly for the Ministry of Defence. He had factories in Marple, New Mills and Stockport. He was a founder member of High Lane British Legion. He was a proud and private man.”

Beginning as Ashton Overalls, which was established in the early 60s in the small Derbyshire town of New Mills, in 1969 they became Eaton & Entwistle and because of demand on the business opened the second factory in Marple, manufacturing khaki coats &overalls under contract for the MOD & PO. In 1972 the factory in New Mills was closed down and the Marple site expanded. At this point, the company was renamed E&E WorkwearLimited. Work in style purchased E&E in March 2019.
