Bevrijding Dieteren WWII

Donald Martin is een zoon van Frederick Victor en Fanny Martin(nee Small) en werd vermoedelijk geboren Fisher Street, Great Bridge nabij Tipton en West Bromwich in Staffordshire.
Donald had an elder brother Gordon and also a sister Doris Waters(Nee Martin) who passed away 23 March 2024 at the age of 97 years. From her daughter Gillian and grandson Richard I received a newspaper clipping and a photo of Donald.

Hij was als Trooper bij het 1st Royal Tank Regiment en raakte dodelijk gewond in zijn Cromwell tank bij Putbroek.
In de war diary van 1RTR lezen we ‘“C” Sqn adv area 775789 through gap between woods towards objectives at 801804 and 795810. Lost one tk on min dvr killed, co-driver died of wounds’. Mogelijk was deze co-driver Donald Martin.
Een andere bron die ik hier nog wil aanhalen is de Recommendation van een Militairy Medal voor Cpl David Johnstone. Enkele fragmenten hieruit: ‘ On 24 Jan 45, this NCO was Tp Sgt of the leading troop of “A” Sqn 1 R Tks, whose objective was a wood N of PURBECK 7780 (red. Putbroek). On arriving in the area, the troop came under heavy fire from SPs, and mortars from the area of the big wood 7780 and from small arms from the wood 769802 during which, two of the troop tanks were hit by AP. Seeing this, Sgt JOHNSTONE moved round to the S of one of these tks in which 2 men had been seriously wounded and having ordered his gunner to cover him forward went on foot across an open stretch of 100 yds to help the crew extricate the wounded men from the tank. Having helped these 2 men back to the tp he then returned to the disabled tk under very heavy mortar fire and sniping from a nearby wood and drove the tk whose steering was partially disabled, back to safety in spite of the fact that it was being continuously shot at with AP. This tank was later used to remove the wounded men as no other means could possibly be brought up.’

Nadat Donald op 25 januari 1945 aan zijn verwondingen overleed werd hij op de militaire begraafplaats in Dieteren begraven. Op 15 oktober 1946 werd hij herbegraven op de War Cemetery in Nederweert.
