From Ian Davies I received some information about Arthur, he wrote:
Arthur Henry Davies was my great uncle (my grandfather's brother). Unfortunately, the only details I have for Arthur are what I have found out from family tree research.
What I do know about Arthur is that he was born in 1915 in Merthyr Tydfil, Wales and was the 7th of nine children. His father, Ernest James Davis had various jobs throughout his life (farmer, street lamp lighter, motor car driver) but at the time of Arthur's birth, the family were struggling for money and when Arthur was 3 years old, he, his younger sister Lilian and his mother Rose spent some months in the poor house (also known as The Workhouses) in Merthyr Tydfil - that was where my grandfather William Thomas was born.
I don't believe Arthur ever got married as he joined the Queen's Royal Welsh regiment on the 12th March 1936 when he was 20 years old. He served as a Private in the Army throughout WW2 and I believe he was mainly stationed in Western Europe. He was killed in action on the 29th January 1945 and is buried at the war cemetery in Nederweert.
He must have remained close to/fond of his parents as he had asked for the inscription on his headstone to be dedicated to them.
